Pick 3 – The First 1000 Draws
The Oklahoma Lottery kicked off on November 10, 2005 with the first Pick 3 drawing.
On August 8, 2008 the 1,000th drawing of the Oklahoma Lottery’s Pick 3 game was conducted.
Since the odds on the Pick 3 game is 1 in 1,000, it was felt that taking a closeup look at the results of the first 1,000 draws of the Oklahoma Lottery Pick 3 just might prove interesting and sure enough, it did.
Since Pick 3 consists of three balls being drawn each night, a total of 3,000 balls were drawn over the course of the first 1,000 Pick 3 draws.
Of these 1,509 were even numbers ( 0,2,4,6 or 8 ) and 1,491 were odd ( 1,3,5,7 or 9 ). There were 18 more even numbered balls drawn than odd numbered balls drawn.
If one sums the values of the three balls drawn nightly they will come up with a value between 0 (0,0,0) and 27 (9,9,9). Considering sums between 0 and 13 as “low” and sums between 14 and 27 as “high” provides a means to determine whether the low or high numbers were favored.
Over the course of the first 1,000 draws of the Oklahoma Lottery’s Pick 3 game there were 487 “low” sums and 513 “high” sums. There were 26 more “high” sums than “low” sums.
Some Pick 3 players prefer playing “triples”; the same number three times (0,0,0 or 1,1,1 or 2,2,2 for example. Other prefer playing “doubles”; duplicating one number (0,0,1 or 7,1,7 for example). While others prefer playing non-duplicating numbers such as (0,1,2).
In examining the winning numbers from the first 1,000 draws of the Oklahoma Pick 3 game one finds:
Triples occurred only 10 times in 1,000 draws with the combination (3,3,3 occurring 3 times), (6,6,6 occurring twice), (9,9,9 occurring twice) and the triples of 1, 4 and 8 each occurring once in 1,000 draws. Triples of 0, 2, 5 and 7 did not occur at all.
Doubles occurred a total of 254 times, with the first and second ball matching in 98 draws and the first and third ball matching in 98 draws. Doubles comprised of the second and third balls drawn occurred only 58 times.
In a total of 736 draws of the Oklahoma Pick 3 lottery there were no duplicates.
Now, lets take a look at the the frequency distribution of the numbers dawn in the three positions, i.e. ball 1, ball 2 and ball 3:
