Of course the big news for Oklahoma Lottery players in June was the $105.8 million win for Don and Joyce Harvey of Muldrow, Oklahoma. They took the cash payout which amounted to $33.7 million after taxes.
The next biggest Powerball news was a couple of $200,000 winners and three $10,000 winners during the month of June.
June was over-all a great month for Oklahoma Powerball players, just as was June of last year when Oklahoma had its only other Powerball Jackpot winner.
Over the course of the month of June there were no $25,000 (taxes paid) winners in the Oklahoma Cash 5 lottery. Our records show there has not been a big Cash 5 winner since May 8th. The total of cash winnings for the month for Cash 5 players was $116,610 (excluding free Cash 5 Easy Picks). The average total cash winnings per-play night for Cash 5 players for June was $14,576, the lowest single night’s total cash winnings was $12,050 on June 14th and the highest single night’s total cash winnings was $18,870 on June 5th.
Over the course of the month of June the total cash winnings by players of the Oklahoma Pick 3 lottery was $270,090. The lowest single night’s cash winnings by Pick 3 players was $3,840 on June 25th and the highest single night’s cash winnings was $15,810 on June 29th. The average nightly total cash winnings for Pick 3 players during June was $9,003.

The Oklahoma Lottery Commission met this past week to approve the fiscal year 2008 budget and also authorized some changes that most Oklahoma Lottery players will like.
Starting on July 14 Cash 5 will expand to three drawings a week; Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.
Starting on July 31 a new ‘scratcher’ game will begin, a game in which players not only can win instant cash but also the opportunity to appear on the Oklahoma Game Show. This will be a lottery players game show which will be taped in Oklahoma City and shown each Saturday night on KOKH-25 in Oklahoma City and hopefully a Tulsa TV outlet. Game show contestants will have the opportunity to win up to $50,000 on the show. The actual start date for broadcast of the show is not yet certain but October is the goal and all contestants will be selected from winners in the new ‘scratcher’ lottery.
Starting next year Oklahoma will join 10 other states in a game called Hot Lotto, operated by the same Multi-State Lottery Association that operates Powerball. Hot Lotto plays just like Powerball but with much better odds and lower jackpots, which start at $1 million and go up $50,000 after each drawing in which there is no jackpot winner. The average jackpot win with Hot Lotto is currently $4.5 million. Hot Lotto is played on the same nights as Powerball and tickets are $1 each. The game currently uses five white numbers from 1 to 39 and one orange “hot ball” number from 1-19. Overall odds of winning a prize are 1:16 versus Powerball’s overall odds of winning of 1 in 36.61.

By now most that play and follow the lottery know that Don and Joyce Harvey of Muldrow, Oklahoma are Oklahoma’s second big winners in the Powerball lottery, winning a $105.8 million jackpot Wednesday night.
Just one year ago, another Oklahoma Powerball player or players won big also, winning a $101.8 million jackpot. Last year’s big winners remain anonymous, having set up a trust to receive and manage the winnings. To this day the public has no idea of who won, how many share in the trust, what they are doing with their winnings and how their lives have changed.
That is not the case this year, as Don and Joyce Harvey appeared in person Friday to claim their winnings in the form of a $33.7 million lump sum after taxes payment and were photographed holding the ‘big check’ and thereafter appeared before reporters.
Don and Joyce Harvey appear down to earth folks, the kind of people most of us appreciate as friends, neighbors and coworkers. And we wish them the very best that life has to offer.
It is going to be very interesting to see how life plays out for Don and Joyce Harvey in the wake of their new fame and fortune. Hopefully they will not experience the problems that have affected some other multi-million dollar lottery winners and life for them will be what they wish it to be.
The Harveys chose to go public with their good fortune and while this is not the way this writer would handle a winning scenario I wish them the very best life has to offer.
