Arkansas Voters Approve Lottery

By an overwhelming margin (64% to 36%) Arkansas voters have approved a state lottery overturning a ban set in the state’s constitution since 1874.

Proponents of an Arkansas Lottery say it will generate $100 million a year in lottery revenue, the profit from which is to be used to fund college scholarships for Arkansas residents.

The lottery initiative passed in all 75 Arkansas counties and its creation is pretty much assured early on in 2009.

The Arkansas lottery initiative leaves it up to lawmakers to hammer out the details, establish rules, regulations, and logistics for the lottery and they will likely do so soon after the Arkansas Legislature convenes in January.

Lt. Gov. Bill Halters, a prime backer of the lottery proposal, wants to see the Arkansas Lottery set up similar to the Georgia Lottery which also funds college scholarship with the only qualifiers being that the student graduates from a high school in the state, has a ‘B’ average and attends a college in the state.

Prospective Arkansas Lottery players will just have to wait and see how the state Legislature crafts the lottery and the requirements for scholarships.

What is without question is that the advent of an Arkansas Lottery will have an impact on the sales of tickets for the lotteries of Oklahoma and Missouri. This is especially the case if the Arkansas Lottery includes Powerball.

  1. Looks like Passailaigue pulled it off on the lottery. So far the scratch off tickets have been selling more than a million dollars worth a day and the Powerball starts up on Halloween.

This should help tremendously on the scholarship fund and get a lot more students an invaluable education.

Who would have ever thought a lottery could save the state…
