Congratulations to the Harveys
By now most that play and follow the lottery know that Don and Joyce Harvey of Muldrow, Oklahoma are Oklahoma’s second big winners in the Powerball lottery, winning a $105.8 million jackpot Wednesday night.
Just one year ago, another Oklahoma Powerball player or players won big also, winning a $101.8 million jackpot. Last year’s big winners remain anonymous, having set up a trust to receive and manage the winnings. To this day the public has no idea of who won, how many share in the trust, what they are doing with their winnings and how their lives have changed.
That is not the case this year, as Don and Joyce Harvey appeared in person Friday to claim their winnings in the form of a $33.7 million lump sum after taxes payment and were photographed holding the ‘big check’ and thereafter appeared before reporters.
Don and Joyce Harvey appear down to earth folks, the kind of people most of us appreciate as friends, neighbors and coworkers. And we wish them the very best that life has to offer.
It is going to be very interesting to see how life plays out for Don and Joyce Harvey in the wake of their new fame and fortune. Hopefully they will not experience the problems that have affected some other multi-million dollar lottery winners and life for them will be what they wish it to be.
The Harveys chose to go public with their good fortune and while this is not the way this writer would handle a winning scenario I wish them the very best life has to offer.

I’m curious. Why would you have chosen to avoid talking to the media like the Harvey’s did?
In an age where criminals will kill a person to steal $20 I do not feel it wise to go public with a sudden fortune. The risks are just too great, especially for family members of ‘big time winners’.
The Harveys seem to be wonderful people and hopefully the world-wide publicity of their big win does not endanger them.
I fear it will.
I hope I am wrong.
