Changes Coming
The Oklahoma Lottery Commission met this past week to approve the fiscal year 2008 budget and also authorized some changes that most Oklahoma Lottery players will like.
Starting on July 14 Cash 5 will expand to three drawings a week; Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.
Starting on July 31 a new ’scratcher’ game will begin, a game in which players not only can win instant cash but also the opportunity to appear on the Oklahoma Game Show. This will be a lottery players game show which will be taped in Oklahoma City and shown each Saturday night on KOKH-25 in Oklahoma City and hopefully a Tulsa TV outlet. Game show contestants will have the opportunity to win up to $50,000 on the show. The actual start date for broadcast of the show is not yet certain but October is the goal and all contestants will be selected from winners in the new ’scratcher’ lottery.
Starting next year Oklahoma will join 10 other states in a game called Hot Lotto, operated by the same Multi-State Lottery Association that operates Powerball. Hot Lotto plays just like Powerball but with much better odds and lower jackpots, which start at $1 million and go up $50,000 after each drawing in which there is no jackpot winner. The average jackpot win with Hot Lotto is currently $4.5 million. Hot Lotto is played on the same nights as Powerball and tickets are $1 each. The game currently uses five white numbers from 1 to 39 and one orange “hot ball” number from 1-19. Overall odds of winning a prize are 1:16 versus Powerball’s overall odds of winning of 1 in 36.61.

As of August 8, there are 10 members of the Hot Lotto game. We know OK will join in January. There are two other MUSL (Powerball) members that have committed to Hot Lotto; one will offer it starting in October; the other in January (same month as OK.) Does anybody know the two states “to be named later”? Currently, Hot Lotto is available in: DC, IA, KS, MN, MT, NH, NM, ND, SD, and WV.
